What’s a Litany?

A Litany is a list of associated short prayers or prayer requests. They give praise, seek assistance and offer thanks.

Litanies are often said where there is a gathering of two or more people, with one leading the litany recital, while the others respond. Frequently, they are used as a form of meditation and reflection.

There are many well known litanies. The most common are the six approved by the Church for public recitation. All are listed here.  Other litanies, primarily to the Saints, may be used for private recital.

You may not be familiar with litanies, but they can offer great comfort and strengthen ones faith. Enjoy your personal or group recital of your chosen litany. Heaven will be rejoicing.
