Dedication of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (Feast Day)
(Built between 351 – 366)
This is one of the oldest feast days in the Catholic Church. It commemorates the dedication of the restored Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the largest Church honouring the Blessed Virgin Mary in Rome. The original Church was built between 351 and 366.
The Feast Day is also referred to as Our Lady of Snows; the name originating from an old legend where snow is said to have fallen to signify the spot where Mary wished the Church to be built. As always, it’s another great day to celebrate God’s gift of the Blessed Virgin Mary to all of us.
Mary Queen of Heaven:
O Maria, transform my heart unto thine.
Place around it a wreath of purity, adorned in virtue.
Take my heart, dear Mother, consecrated as your own.
Present it to God the Father as an offering from me to you.
