Prayer is Love, I want to Love

What Made John A Good Man?

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 1 – The Prophet John The Baptist

Have you told anyone they are amazing recently? Perhaps, a friend or someone at work!

When Jesus had something important to say and wanted to get peoples instant attention, he often set the scene with the words, “I tell you the truth…” Praising John the Baptist, the son of Elizabeth and Zechariah, was one such occasion.

Honeycomb

John was faithful to the message he preached. He lived a life of fasting, penance and prayer. His diet was locusts and wild honey, instead of the more savoury foods on offer. He wore uncomfortable camel-hair clothing and a leather belt and set up home in the hostile desert wilderness.

John taught a simple and clear message to the people who followed him on mass; prepare for the coming of Jesus; turn away from sin, repent and be baptised.

John was not a man with status or power and he had no wish to acquire them. His love was for the Word of God and he was prepared to die for it.

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, among those born of women, no one has arisen greater than John the Baptist.” (Mt 11:7-19)

Thought

Few of us can live up to John’s amazing standards but, we can take small daily steps.

Reflection

O Most Merciful Redeemer, Friend and Brother, may we see you more clearly, Love you more dearly, and follow You more nearly; day-by-day.

Prayer: Humility

Most humble Jesus,
give me a share of your humility.
Take from my heart, everything that displeases you;
convert it totally to you,
so that I may no longer will or desire
anything other than what you will.
