Chapter 7 – The Kingdom of God
Story No. 1 of 7 (Mark 4:26-29)
Jesus told this Parable to his disciples:
“The Kingdom of God (Heaven) is like someone who spreads seed on the ground. He goes to sleep and gets up night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. By itself, the soil produces a crop, first the stalk, then the head, then the full grain in the head. And when the grain is ripe, he sends in the sickle because the harvest has come”.
In Jesus’ parable, the seed represents the Word of God and once sown, it grows within our hearts, even without further intervention but through the working of the Holy Spirit. Then, in God’s time, the fruit of the Word blossoms, ripens and finally. God harvests it.
This parable reminds me of a short story involving a teacher who was explaining the Gospel to her young students. A visitor to the class asked one of them, “What are you drawing?” She replied, “Heaven.” “Oh,” the surprised visitor responded, “I have never seen heaven, what does it look like?” The child replied, “Wait until I am finished and I will show you!”
The teacher was doing as Jesus had asked his disciples in the Parable, spreading his Gospel. The Holy Spirit was already working in the child’s heart and, in time, Jesus’ Word would blossom and bear much fruit within it.
Is the Holy Spirit active in my heart and thoughts?
Lord Jesus, teach me how to hear the words of the Holy Spirit and follow Your true path.
Prayer: Holy Spirit
Come Holy Spirit,
fill the hearts of your faithful
and kindle in them the fire of Your Divine Love.
Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created,
and You shall renew the face of the earth.
O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit
instructed the hearts of the faithful.
Grant, that by the same Spirit we may be truly wise
and ever rejoice in His consolation.
We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
