Many Disciples Take Offence At Jesus

Jesus’ Life: Chapter 9 – The Way To The Cross

When Jesus first said, “I am the bread of life… I have come down from heaven…If anyone eats from this bread he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh…” many of his followers left Him; they didn’t believe Him. (John 6:35,42,51)

Pope Francis Celebration the Holy Eucharist

As Jesus watched them depart, he said to his twelve Apostles, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” Simon Peter answered saying, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life”.

When the disciples asked Jesus to “give [them] this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:32-35)

Jesus was at the time comparing himself and his teachings to bread, using the term synonymously with food. However, we all know that the bread we eat at mealtimes perishes, in contrast to the bread He offers to us, which will lead to our eternal happiness in heaven. (John 6:60-66)

Thought

Today, we are invited to follow in Simon Peter’s footsteps, happily listening to and living Jesus’ Gospel, including, eating and drinking his Sacred Body and Blood through the Holy Eucharist; the way to our “eternal life”.

Reflection

Lord Jesus, help me to share your Gospel with others so that we may all be one with you.

Prayer: Joy (Psalm 99)

Cry out with Joy to the Lord, all the earth.
Serve the Lord with gladness.
Come before him singing with joy.

Know that He, the Lord, is God.
He made us, we belong to Him,
we are his people, the sheep of His flock.
