Washing The Disciples’ Feet

Extract

Last Supper

Many extraordinary things happened at the Last Supper. At one point Jesus got up, removed his outer garment and, taking a towel and basin of water, washed the disciple’s feet.

The disciples were stunned. Yes, feet need washing, but this was a job for lowly servants, not their Master!

Jesus’ response to the Apostles was, “I have washed your feet, you too ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example – you should do just as I have done for you”. (John 13:14-15)

Thought

Jesus was exemplifying tremendous leadership. He was telling the Apostles that, if they wanted to be great in God’s eyes they must be least in human eyes.

Reflection

Lord Jesus, help me to be more humble and helpful; bring me closer to my own brothers and sisters and your Almighty Father.

Prayer: Faith (St Benedict)

Gracious and Holy Father,
give those whom we meet today,
the wisdom to discover You,
the intelligence to understand You,
the diligence to seek after You,
the patience to wait for You,
eyes to behold You,
a heart to meditate upon You,
and a life to proclaim You,
through the power of the Spirit of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
