When the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and told her she would bear a Son, the Angel also told her that Elizabeth, her cousin, was already six months pregnant. It was extraordinary news, not least because Elizabeth was old and barren.
Mary, probably accompanied by Joseph, ‘hurriedly’ went to see Elizabeth.
At the moment of their meeting, Elizabeth exclaimed in a loud voice, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child in your womb. And who am I that the mother of my Lord should come and visit me? For the instant the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leapt for joy”. (Luke 1:42-44)
Mary stayed with Elizabeth for three months, probably until the birth of Elizabeth’s baby, John the Baptist.
This was an incredible gathering of people watched over by God the Father: A pregnant Mary carrying the Son of God, a pregnant Elizabeth carrying the Prophet John the Baptist, St Joseph and St Zachariah.
O Most Pure Heart of Mary, you are full of goodness. Show us your love. Let the flame of your heart, O Mary, descend on all people.
Prayer: Sweet Jesus
Sweet Jesus, Body and Blood most Holy,
be the delight and pleasure of my soul,
my strength and salvation in all temptations,
my joy and peace in every trial,
my light and guide in every word and deed,
and my final protector in death. Amen.
